THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: The lowdown on the next Batman film

With the second of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, The Dark Knight, smashing all kinds of records the world over, fans have hardly had time to catch breath from seeing Heath Ledger as the Joker and Aaron Eckhart as Two face take on the caped crusader before rumours have started flying around about the next one. Christian Bale once more donned the cowl for The Dark Knight, which also starred movie heavyweights Michael Caine and Gary Oldman, reprising their roles from Batman Begins, and early indications are that he will be doing so for a third film once it comes around.

But what will be the story of the next film? Who will be the villain, or indeed, villains? Here we’ll take a look at those rumours, and bring you the facts and the fiction on the next outing for the Dark Knight and his adversaries.

What is clear is that the next film is going to have to be just as incredible as the previous two, but with the talent that is being thrown at these projects, and the ever bigger profile that comic book movies are garnering, I think the franchise is in safe hands.

This page was begun in September 2008 and will be updated as news and rumours come through!

WILL CHRISTOPHER NOLAN RETURN?

At the time of writing, Chrisptopher Nolan is yet to sign on to direct the third Batman movie in this new series. The film will definitely happen, thanks to the enormous success of the Dark Knight, but the director has yet to agree to sit in the chair again.

JOHNNY DEPP AS THE RIDDLER?

There is no truth to the rumour that Johnny Depp is to play the Riddler in the next film. This rumour was floated online and in print, but the actor has not been approached for the part. When questioned about the rumour, Depp stated that ‘It would be a fun gig’, but that’s all thus far.

ANGELINA JOLIE AS CATWOMAN?

This rumour was actually started by Angelina Jolie herself! The actress, known more for adopting children and giving birth amid a media frenzy more than her acting of late, stated that she would be up for playing the feline villain in the next film. While it would be great to see the character in the next film, fans aren’t sure whether Jolie would be able to take on the role played so well by Michelle Pfeiffer and so terribly by Halle Berry (Stick to Marvel films Halle- they do suit you better!). Plus, many film fans still have a bad taste in their mouth from the godawful 2004 Catwoman movie.

THE DARK KNIGHT

2009 UPDATES

THE DARK KNIGHT TO RETURN IN 2011?

A Warner Bros executive has stated that we could be seeing the next Batman film as early as 2011. The next film, following on from the massive success of the dark Knight, is yet to even be written, so the statement that it will be released in 2011 seems a little far-fetched.  There is currently no movement whatsoever on a new batman movie, or indeed any of the DC comics character movies that Warner Bros have the rights to. Once WATCHMEN comes out, it may be a while until any more Dc characters come out as films due to Warner Bros putting them all on hold while they decide what direction to take in light of The Dark Knight’s success.  Marvel comics fans can rejoice though- there is at least half a dozen new Marvel movies to come between now and 2011.

I've been looking for updates of any kind on the next Batman film and it seems as if Nolan is keeping a tight lip on it till Inception has come out. I don't expect to hear anything till the 2nd quarter of 2010.

I would like to see Johnny Depp play the Riddler as we know he will deliver an experienced and engaging performance. We know he can act as a ‘freak’ or slightly strange, (Willy Wonka, The Mad Hatter in the upcoming ‘Alice In Wonderland’, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, and still the list goes on…), so Depp would mould into the role of the cryptic clue master very easily.

I hope they 'revive' Two Face, as the character could have an interesting part to play in the films plot, for example he could be locked up somewhere secure where the public assume he is dead, as the police don't want the public to know that the cities' 'white knight' is actually a killer. Two Face could then escape, which would lead to all manners of interesting plot lines for the writers to think up...

I hope they don't recast the Joker or use a CGI of Heath as not only would it be a bit 'offensive' since his unfortunate death, but also because I don't think anyone could match his performance as the 'anarchical terrorist who is dark and sinister' interpretation of The Joker. (I am not saying that Cesar Romero or Jack Nicholson didn't play The Joker very well or as good as Heath, but their interpretation were slightly different. Romero played the goofy trickster thief, where as Nicholson was somewhere in between Goofy and anarchical terrorist.

This does not mean however, that I would not like to see The Joker is this series of the films. I think that to introduce other key characters such as Harley Quinn, they could recast The Joker as a voice part. (Here me out..) Mark Hamill, (who voices The Joker from the animated series and Batman Arkham Asylum The Game), plays a scary and maniacal version of The Joker which with the right script could carry the part that Heath put down. I will stress the words ‘voice part’, no physical acting, don’t even show his face. Only show his figure, (so he can be recognised as The Joker),in the shadows of Arkham, seducing and corrupting Harley Quinn’s mind and persuading her to continue his work. The only problem is that Hamill’s voice is of an older, slightly hoarse sounding Joker, where as Heath had a younger sounding voice. This could simply be explained by saying that The Joker has been ‘aged’ and ‘wearied’ by being locked away on his own with in the walls of Arkham. It could work, I might not, personally I am undecided.

This leads to the question, who could play Harley Quinn? I believe, although no-one else has suggested it, that Helena Bonham Carter could nail the part. Youtube her name and ‘Mrs Lovett’, (From Sweeney Todd), or ‘Bellatrix Lestrange’ , (From Harry Potter), and you will see she is a competent actress who could easily play every side of Harley Quinn. Her serious acting skills would work when Quinn is seduced by The Joker and decides to become the clown princes lover/sidekick, where as her maniacal side would come in to play when she is left to tear up Gotham on her own while Mr J is behind bars, (assuming they don’t recast The Joker fully.)

Finally, some people say that the film needs a mob boss or something like that to keep the mob boss plot line intact. I suggest they leave The Penguin until the 4th film (assuming they’ll be one) as he is such an interesting and complex character that he deserves a film to himself along with minor villains. (I would also like to see the 3rd film tie up The Joker/Harley Quinn storyline). Also, leave The Scarecrow, he’s been in the first two and he’s been caught and locked up, it’s time they left the character alone. Some people have suggested bringing in Hush or Black Mask or even Calendar Man, (now wouldn’t that be interesting…joke) but I think the person they should introduce has already been introduced, Mr Zsaaz. Briefly in Batman Begins Zsaaz was introduced and I think he would be a perfect ‘minor villain’ as he has an interesting personality and story to tell, (Scarring on body for every person he kills, schizophrenia etc). I would like to say that the original actor Tim Booth could reprise his role as it states in the films plot line that the character escaped from the Arkham riots, perfectly setting the scene for his appearance in Batman 3...)

P.S Introducing Robin will be the biggest and last mistake they EVER make………
